Global Reading Bridge

Global Reading Bridge

Started during the pandemic, Global Reading Bridge began as a small one-on-one reading effort to support children who lost access to English learning resources. Today, it has grown into a youth-led international program offering free online English reading sessions to students in non-English-speaking regions. Led by youth volunteers, the program continues to thrive—building confidence, strengthening language skills, and creating meaningful cross-cultural friendships year after year.

Program Lead

Alyssa Zhang

Founder: Alyssa (Nuoyan) Zhang

(Alyssa Zhang)

Alyssa Zhang has been part of the Wahaha Youth Club since second grade, and from the very beginning, her involvement has been rooted in a sincere desire to serve others. Whether performing at senior centers, supporting the Microsoft Spring Festival Gala, or participating in countless community events, Alyssa consistently gravitated toward roles where she could bring comfort, connection, and encouragement to those around her.

Guided by this service-first mindset, Alyssa founded Global Reading Bridge in high school. What started as simple one-on-one reading sessions with children—made possible through partnerships with professors in China—quickly grew into something larger. Alyssa poured her time, energy, and heart into building an online "mini classroom," inviting young volunteers to join her and creating a warm, dependable space where children felt seen, supported, and inspired to learn.

Now a student at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU), Alyssa continues to lead the program with the same compassion and quiet perseverance that defined its earliest days. Even with a demanding academic schedule, she remains deeply involved—mentoring volunteers, supporting students, and ensuring the program's mission stays centered on service. Many of her original teammates, now in college themselves, still volunteer alongside her, and new young mentors join each year, drawn by the spirit of giving that Alyssa models so naturally.

Alyssa's enduring commitment to serving others has shaped Global Reading Bridge into a meaningful, youth-driven program—one that connects cultures, strengthens communities, and empowers children through the simple, human act of reading together.
