WYC coordinators will pair students based on their levels and create a group chat for each pair
Reading materials can be selected based on the student's English level
Volunteers read aloud; students in China follow along
Reading sessions are 30 or 60 minutes per week
✓ Online English Mini-Classroom
The Online Mini-Classroom is a new volunteer project. Each volunteer (or group of volunteers) who wants to be a "little teacher" can select a picture book or chapter novel to teach (we can also recommend books).
Each class is 60 minutes. Picture books can be weekly sessions; chapter novels are scheduled based on the book's length (e.g., 6-week or 8-week courses).
Class Procedure:
Volunteer reads through the text once and poses simple comprehension questions (about time, place, characters, etc. — questions answerable directly from the text)
Explain key vocabulary in simple English or translate to Chinese; encourage students to use the words in spoken sentences
Volunteer reads through the text a second time and poses open-ended discussion questions (e.g., "What would you do if you were in the same situation?")
Students take turns reading aloud, one paragraph each; volunteer helps correct pronunciation
If time allows, ask students to summarize the chapter they just read
Volunteers Needed for the Online Mini-Classroom:
✓ Lead instructor
✓ Teaching assistant
✓ Technical/background support
✓ Video editor
Program Notes:
The English Reading Program is a free, non-profit activity run by WYC for children in China. WYC does not charge any fees.
All junior volunteers are WYC members or local elementary/middle/high school students.
Each reading group has its own chat group. Whether participants add each other privately is a personal choice unrelated to WYC.
There is a 15–16 hour time difference between Seattle and China. Volunteers are generally available Friday and Saturday evenings Seattle time, which is Saturday and Sunday morning to midday Beijing time. Please plan accordingly.
If a student is unable to continue for any reason, please notify the WYC coordinator in advance.
Missing two consecutive sessions (without prior arrangement) will be considered a withdrawal from the program.
To avoid messaging account issues, participants are encouraged to share an email address as a backup contact.
All interpretation of program guidelines is at the sole discretion of Wahaha Youth Club.
